Using carpets is a good idea, especially for UK residents as carpets help to keep heat in a room and are also comfortable. If you have a bit of money to spend, consider using a dense carpet with twisted fibres for busy areas of the house, such as halls and living rooms.
Frieze is a rugged, cut pile carpet that is hard-wearing, while velvet plush is at the other end of the scale, looking nice yet very dainty; therefore good for the bedroom. If money is no object, buying a wool carpet will see you through many years and will still look good. A nylon carpet with a de-lustered finish looks similar to wool and also lasts, while polyester is cheap but has a huge range of colours.
Many people go for a nylon carpet, but beware that cheapness does not go hand-in-hand with quality; spending a bit more on a carpet now will save you the hassle of possible replacements in the near future. A good nylon carpet can resist stains, dirt, crushing and static. If you have your heart set on carpets for the bathroom and kitchen, olefin/ polypropylene carpets are resistant to moisture, while stain resistant carpeting is also now on the market and can be used in the kitchen.
You not only have the quality of the carpet to consider but also the colour. Being critical now will save you hassles further down the road. Think what the carpet you are looking at in the store will look like against your drapes, furniture and wall colour. If you can't decide then and there, ask the shop for a sample or small off-cut that you can take home and match up to furnishings in your room. Using an underlay is also worth considering as the carpet will be more comfortable and longer lasting.
